China, Pakistan Launch Mediation Effort to Facilitate US-Iran Dialogue

(MENAFN) China has stated that its coordinated “mediation” initiative with Pakistan is intended to pave the way for dialogue between the United States and Iran, as the Middle East conflict enters its fifth week, according to reports on Wednesday.

Speaking in Beijing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson подчеркed that the ongoing tensions in the region remain a central concern for all sides, warning that the continued instability serves no party’s interests. “The situation in the Middle East is the focus of all parties, it continues to be tense (which) is not in line with interests of any party,” she said.

Highlighting ongoing diplomatic outreach, she added that efforts led by China, Pakistan, and other stakeholders should be broadly supported. “The mediation efforts made by China, Pakistan, and other parties should be welcomed by all and we (China) are willing to work with Pakistan to steer clear of disruptions, stop the fighting, and create a window of peace talks.”

She stressed that immediate diplomatic engagement is critical. “The top priority is to start peace talks as soon as possible,” she added.

A day earlier, China and Pakistan jointly introduced a five-point proposal aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East. The plan calls for an immediate halt to hostilities, the swift launch of negotiations, protection of civilian infrastructure, safeguarding of maritime routes, and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.

The initiative followed high-level discussions in Beijing between the foreign ministers of both countries. As part of the proposal, both sides urged the restoration of secure and uninterrupted passage for civilian and commercial vessels, emphasizing the need to reopen key maritime corridors without delay.

This push comes as Iran continues to exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for energy shipments to Asia, allowing passage only to ships from nations it considers “friendly countries.”

The diplomatic effort also aligns with Pakistan’s role in facilitating indirect communication between Washington and Tehran in hopes of bringing an end to the ongoing conflict.
