Pakistan Grants Visas to Indian Sikh Pilgrims for Major Festival

(MENAFN) Pakistan has approved visas for 2,800 Sikh pilgrims from India to take part in the festivities of an important religious celebration, according to statements from Islamabad’s High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The festival, known as Baisakhi or Vaisakhi, occurs on the first day of the month of Vaisakh and marks the start of the harvest season.

The event is scheduled from April 10 to 19, and officials anticipate that over 26,000 devotees from around the world will attend.

Indian pilgrims are expected to cross into Pakistan through the Wagah border, arriving in the northeastern city of Lahore on April 10.

The primary ceremony will be held on April 14 at Gurdwara Panja Sahib, a highly venerated site for the Sikh faith, located in Hasan Abdal in eastern Punjab province.

Pakistan hosts several significant Sikh landmarks, including the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Narowal district, approximately 115 kilometers from Lahore, where Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, spent the last 18 years of his life.

This pilgrimage takes place amid ongoing tensions between the neighboring countries, which are engaged in multiple land and maritime disputes and fought a brief four-day conflict last May.

Diplomatic relations between the two nations were downgraded and trade was suspended in 2019 after India’s controversial decision to revoke the semi-autonomous status of the disputed Kashmir Valley, according to reports.
