Pakistan, Switzerland Hold 2nd Call in 24 Hours as US-Iran Deal Nears
According to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held the call with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis, with both officials welcoming what they described as "encouraging progress" toward a landmark understanding between Washington and Tehran.
The two ministers expressed optimism that the flurry of ongoing diplomatic activity would soon translate into broader peace and stability across the Middle East, and agreed to maintain close and continuous contact as events develop.
The conversation came just one day after Cassis and Dar had previously spoken, during which the Swiss minister praised Pakistan's pivotal mediation role amid reports that a potential US-Iran accord could be formally signed in Geneva.
Islamabad's role in the process has been central. Pakistan has been instrumental in facilitating contacts between the two adversarial governments since helping broker a ceasefire in April, positioning itself as an indispensable back-channel between Washington and Tehran.
The pace of developments accelerated sharply on Friday, when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the US and Iran had reached agreement on a "final text" for a pact designed to bring the conflict to a close. Sharif said Islamabad was working in close coordination with both governments to tie up remaining loose ends, adding that "peace has never been this close."
His announcement followed a significant statement by US President Donald Trump on Thursday, in which he revealed he had called off planned airstrikes against Iran and confirmed that negotiations had advanced considerably.
Subsequent reports raised the prospect that US Vice President JD Vance may travel to Europe to participate in the formal signing of the prospective agreement with Iran.
